Why Most People Don’t Make It In Business

It’s pretty sad that most people don’t make it to the 5-year mark in business and even less to the 10-year mark.

There’s so many reasons this happens – lack of commitment, no support, cash flow, lack of strategy/planning, knowledge…

But I believe that the biggest reason people don’t make it is because they give up too soon. One little setback comes their way and they are out. Some may even feel like they’ve done their best, but in all honesty they haven’t even started yet.

See the thing is, business is the greatest personal development journey you will ever go on. Most people don’t want to work on themselves and they don’t want to learn about business. They think they just need to be great at their skill.

Whilst that is important you will not get very far if you’re a great trainer or coach but have no clue on how to run a business. You’ll also fall short if you avoid working on yourself.

You’ve got to learn how to run a business – the marketing, sales and strategy.

And you’ve got to work on yourself – building confidence, letting go of limiting beliefs, building mental toughness to keep going when obstacles come your way.

If you don’t I’m sorry but you’ll just be another statistic.

And I don’t want that for you.

It’s time to step up!

If you know you’ve not been giving it your all it’s time to get committed. You’ve got to take this seriously if you want to change your life.

It’s time to be honest with yourself.

How many hours a week do you spend on Facebook?
How many hours a week do you spend watching TV or Netflix?
How many hours a week do you spend being distracted (not focused on important tasks like sales, marketing, content creation)?

Now add it all up.

Don’t make the numbers smaller than what they are. It’s time to wake up and get real.

This is how many hours (probably more actually) that you are wasting each week.
This is how many hours you are taking away from the people you can help.
This is how many hours you are taking away from your family.
This is how many hours you are bullshitting yourself and holding yourself back.
This is how many hours you are moving away from your dream.

So right now you have a choice.

Keep doing what you’ve been doing – and keep getting what you’ve been getting right?


It’s time to change.

The thing is, you don’t need to change everything all at once. That just leads to overwhelm and inconsistency. Just choose one thing to commit to right now and I guarantee you will start moving forwards.

And be real with yourself. That one thing shouldn’t be admin work or busy work or cleaning the house. That one thing should be something that generates you money or leads. Focus on the important things and you’ll move forwards.

How To Work 3 Hours A Day And Still Grow Your Business

I just flew to England recently and will be in the UK/Europe for the next 2 months.

Whilst I’m away I will be working 3-4 days a week working only a few hours a day. Less time doesn’t mean less value, less time with my clients, less growth. If it’s structured in the right way.

Every time I go away I make more money than I did before I left. My clients still get massive value. And I reach out and help more people. Best of all I get some time out to recharge my batteries and spend time with friends and family.

You might be thinking “how the hell do you do that?” When I go away clients leave, I make less money and I feel overwhelmed with how much I have to do when I get back.

Don’t worry that used to happen with me too. Until I put things in place to change my situation.

So how can you do that –

Tip 1 – Don’t go away for long periods of time when you are just starting out. When you are in the beginning phases of a business it requires you to be 100% committed, present and takes more time to build.

Put in the work so that you can create a business that has a team to support you, systems and automation in place and give massive value to your clients to build a strong community.

Tip 2 – Before you go away create extra content and get other things done that you don’t want to be doing whilst away. This minimises what you have to do whilst away, so you can focus on the important priorities and still enjoy time exploring or chilling out.

Tip 3 – Create a plan where you have daily tasks that help to grow your business. These should include sales, marketing and content creation. Outsource or automate anything else.

Tip 4 – If you do 1:1 coaching sessions book them in over zoom or Skype. If you are only away for a week or 2 do extra sessions before you leave and after you get back so you can have time out.

I’m away for 2 months so I’ll still be doing group calls and 1:1 calls but they have all been booked in advance by my amazing assistant. This minimises a lot of time going back and forth setting appointments.

Tip 5 – Choose a time of day that you are going to work. I like to get up early and get my work done before everyone else is up.

For example this morning I woke up around 4:45. I did a group call with clients, got back to all my PM’s, emails and notifications, caught up on some learning in groups I’m in, posted in my groups, wrote a post, checked my bank account and checked in with my assistant on where we are both at with tasks.

All of this was done in 2.5 hours and now I have the rest of the day to spend with Nuno, the kids and my Grandparents.

I don’t want to work only a few hours a day every week, because I love what I do. And I know some days you have to put in some bigger hours. But it’s great to know that my business is set up in a way that I have the freedom to do what I want.

How To Make The Last 3 Months of 2016 The Best Yet

We are now in the last quarter of the year. Some people will be thinking Oh Crap! I haven’t achieved my goals. Oh well let’s just wait til 2017.

Whilst I’m over here thinking Oh Crap! I have to squeeze as much as I can into the last part of the year to make the most of it!

I actually don’t think either of these approaches are the best way to go about things. Let me explain why.

Option 1 – Wait til 2017

I don’t believe in letting go of your hopes and dreams and putting things off. Whether it’s waiting to start on Monday, or next month or next year. I think you should live every day to the full – whatever that looks like for you. That doesn’t mean push, hustle and burn yourself out. It means live each day with passion and purpose and do things that make you happy.

If you’re putting these things off, you’ll just keep doing that. And then you’ll most likely never achieve your dreams.

Here’s some examples for you –

Say you want to make $10K in new sales each month. But instead, you just take it easy, have some time out and wait til next year. That’s an extra $30K you’re missing out on this year. $30K that you could put into savings, or back into your business or spend on traveling, adventures, and fun with your family.

Say your goal is to create an online program and you decide to put it off til next year. That’s 3 months where you’re getting stuck in your own head and not reaching out to help others. You’re basically saying I’m too stuck in my own shit to be able to reach out and help you, you’ll just have to wait.

This isn’t about you. It’s about the people you want to help. Get over yourself. Get out of your own head. And reach out and help them. You don’t even need to have all the content ready, just do it as you go along (it actually works better this way). Get something out there, show people you can help them and stop putting it off.

If you put things in your business off what else are you putting off? Your happiness, your health, fun, more freedom, making a difference in the world?

And what is this teaching your clients? You need to be a role model for your clients, in all areas of your life. When you fully step up as the leader you’re meant to be your clients will get better results and you’ll attract more of your ideal clients to you.

So if you’re preaching consistency, sticking to your goals and commitment then it’s time to step up and do it yourself.

Option 2 – Push as hard as you can for 3 months

I realised a few weeks ago that the last quarter of the year was coming up. Maybe I was in denial before that, but I thought December was aaaaages away. Until I realised it wasn’t!

To be honest I felt a little stressed at first. But then I got super motivated and it made me push really hard. I had my biggest income month ever last month and pushed really hard to reach out and help more people and give extra value to my current clients.

But the negative side of that was I got really overwhelmed, stressed and exhausted. It didn’t help that my daughter was on school holidays either! One kid at home is fine, but both of them together is chaos. I swear they have a secret meeting in the morning and conspire to wreak havoc!

Yes it’s important to have goals and to push hard for them.
It’s great to be super motivated.
I love helping people.
I love achieving goals.
I love improving myself and my life.
And I love making money.

But none of that matters if you feel like you have no time and are constantly stressed and lacking energy.

So whilst I still have big goals and plans for the rest of the year, I’ve learnt my lesson. I slipped back into old patterns and habits the last couple of weeks, which I can now learn from to move forwards.

This starts with sticking to a morning routine.

Walk or some form of movement
Gratitude, affirmations
Journaling and goals for the day
Healthy breakfast

I’m also going to check Facebook and emails less and focus on one task at a time. I will take regular breaks through the day to get away from the laptop and give my brain a break. And in the afternoon I will switch off at 4pm to spend quality, present time with my family.

Most people I speak to are either not doing enough in their business or burning themselves out doing too much (but not focusing on the most important things).

Have a think about not only what you want to achieve in these last 3 months of the year but how you want to feel as well. Having monetary goals or business goals is all well and good but achieving them from a place of love, value, connection and happiness is even better.

Put Yourself First To Grow Your Business

I used to feel guilty doing anything for myself.

I would desperately need new clothes, end up going to K-Mart and buying the kids heaps of stuff and myself nothing. I would spend time with the kids but feel bad for taking time out for myself.

I eventually started taking time out for myself. Going to the gym a few days a week. But the feeling of guilt was still there. So straight after a good workout at the gym I would go to the petrol station next door and buy a family block of Rocky Road chocolate. I’d eat it all in the car because I didn’t want my partner to know, or the kids to steal it from me. It was my treat for myself.

I didn’t go to business retreats or events if I couldn’t take my family with me. But eventually I did. 8 days in Hawaii was my first trip away. And the Mother guilt came rushing in. I missed them and felt bad that my partner had to look after them. I got way too drunk on my last night there. Probably because I’d suppressed that need of being me and not only a Mum. That it turned into this cycle of all or nothing.

Why am I telling you all this?

Because I see a lot of Mum’s, Dad’s and people in general living in guilt and shame. Not putting themselves first. Not taking time out for themselves. And they don’t realise it actually affects every area of your life.

Not getting the results you want in business.
Struggling with money.
Negative thoughts.
Low energy.
Not happy in your relationship.
Yelling at the kids.
Gained a few (or more!) kilo’s.
No social life.

When you start putting yourself first everything changes.

Putting yourself first doesn’t mean you put others last. It means that you believe you are worthy enough and important enough to ask for and receive the things you deserve. It actually means you will be a better Mum, Dad, partner, friend and overall human being.

So how do you start doing this?

1. Reflection 

Reflection helps you to realise where you’re currently at and what your triggers are. It helps you to take 100% responsibility for your actions and inactions.

Yelling at the kids – it’s not their fault. Take some time out for yourself so that you can be calmer.

Attracting the wrong clients in your business – take a look within yourself to see what needs to change to attract the right people.

Emotional eating – what healthy habit can you put in place to fill that gap, because food isn’t the answer.

2. Journaling 

Journaling helps you to dig even deeper. Think about what came up in your reflections and write out where this came from, what beliefs are attached to these feelings and what needs to change so that you can improve your life?

3. Action 

The reasons you think you can’t are the reasons you must.

Think you can’t grow your business because of your kids? They are the reason you are doing this! Put the time and effort into growing a successful business and you create more time and opportunities for your family.

Think you can’t focus on your health and fitness because you’re too busy in your business? (I think I’m talking to myself here!) Being healthy, full of energy, fit and strong will help your business grow.

After you’ve reflected and journaled think about one thing you can take action on today. And no it’s not doing more in your business, it probably involves chilling out or doing something for you.

My own reflection. Taking these steps in my life has helped me really transform.

I stopped binge drinking.
I travel regularly without the kids for business opportunities.
I spend quality time with my kids where I am 100% present.
I love myself and my body just as I am.
I have a strong relationship with my partner.
I have a designer who makes beautiful dresses for me instead of buying cheap clothes or none at all (this was a big one for me!).
I stopped binge eating and emotional eating.
I make more money than ever before and have more balance than ever.
I work with my ideal clients and love every single one of them.

I have grown so much over the last couple of years (and before that too). Not only in business but as a person. I am happier, more connected and more fulfilled than I’ve been in a long, long time, if ever! And it all comes back to working on myself.

So I ask you today. Please don’t just read this and do nothing with it. Complete the steps and really think hard. That’s when the gold comes out. Then take action, because you are worth it.

Surface Level Excuses vs Limiting Beliefs

I kept putting off signing up for healthy meals to be delivered to me. I used the excuse of money. That it was just an extra expense. But really that was just a surface level excuse. Just a bullshit story I was telling myself when something deeper was going on.

In reality, it meant that I would be making weight loss and eating well a priority. And I think that scared me. I just wanted to keep living in denial a little bit longer.

What if I got hungry? What if I didn’t like the meals? What if Nuno got pissed because of the extra expense? What if I wanted to share meals with my family instead? All bullshit stories.

So I stopped telling myself these stories and I took action.

I didn’t just want the meals to eat healthy and lose weight but because it would save me so much time. I usually go from one extreme to the other – Eating too much or not eating enough and skipping meals when I’m busy. So signing up for meals solved that issue too. The meals are delicious, I’ve lost weight, they are not as expensive as the meals I was eating out all the time and they save me time too.

And I get to eat yummy things like Pad Thai!

What area of your life is currently not getting the results you want?

  • Health and Fitness
  • Business
  • Finances
  • Family Time
  • Time out of yourself

Think about what you’re currently telling yourself about this area to hold yourself back.

  • I have no time.
  • There’s so many other things I have to do instead of this.
  • I don’t have the money.
  • I don’t know how to do it.
  • I’m not motivated.
  • What if it doesn’t work?

Well, let me tell you it won’t work if you don’t first overcome your surface level excuses (or bullshit stories) and get to the deeper reason.

So what’s the deeper reason for you?

  • Fear of failure
  • Fear of success
  • Fear of judgment
  • Worried that if you spend time on this you won’t have time for your family or you’ll burn out
  • Lack of self-belief or self-worth

Work on that deeper reason and you’ll finally be able to let go and move forwards.

People Don’t Need More Information

There is so much info out there. Anyone could google what they want to find and be bombarded with articles. People already have so much going on in their lives. They are busy, overwhelmed and stressed.

So do you think adding more to that pile will help them?

I hear so many trainers and coaches getting stressed that they don’t know enough to put something out there. Or what if the other PT’s make fun of me because I don’t know enough? Or what if I can’t give enough value and people won’t sign up with me?

First of all, stuff what other trainers and coaches think. Are they paying your bills? Are you trying to help them? Are they your target market?


So why does their opinion matter? Let me tell you, it doesn’t.

And if they do say something, whether it’s to your face or behind your back it’s probably because they are jealous or don’t know how to market themselves.

If anyone puts you down when you are trying to help people and make a difference in the world (and improve your life in the process) then that says more about them than it does about you.

It’s all a reflection…

Take the ego out of it, stop thinking it’s all about you. Because you are putting your message out there to help others right?

Some people will probably get pissed off with this post. And you know what? I don’t care. Posts like this draw my ideal clients to me. People who get it. People who I can help. And it actively pushes the others away. People who would just be a headache if they were a client. And I don’t need that in my life!

So if people don’t need more information and long articles with big words in them then what do they need?

Messages and stories like this. If you follow me on Facebook you’ve probably noticed I’ve been posting stories like this every day (what you haven’t? You need to catch up!).

When you share things that you are going through, successes you’ve had, obstacles you’ve overcome, things you’ve noticed in the industry, client’s results etc your ideal clients will relate. If you’ve gone through something they are going through and have come out the other side then you are the perfect person to help them reach their goals.

But it’s deeper than that too. People want to be around like-minded people. People are attracted to successful, confident people. They want to be entertained. They want to laugh and cry with you.

People buy on emotion, not logic. So dig into that emotion.

Now that doesn’t mean you be an asshole and use creepy tactics to manipulate them. It just means you tell your story. You get your message out there. And the people who relate will want to know more and will want your help.

How do you do this?

First get really clear on your target market. Who they are, what they want, what they are struggling with. This is how you figure out how to talk to them.

Hint – It’s probably you a few years ago.

Second write a story. Something that’s happened to you, something you’ve noticed…… Just write from the heart.

And that’s it.

Do this consistently and over time you will build your followers and your list. More importantly you’ll give awesome value and get people to know you, like you, trust you and then they’ll buy from you.

You may not (actually probably wont) see results on the first day, but that doesn’t mean it wont work. Don’t base your success on likes, shares or comments. Take the ego and the outcome out of it and just do the work every damn day.

Over time the effort you put in will snowball and the results will come. So don’t give up, keep at it and you’ll get there.

Stop Telling Yourself You’re A Perfectionist

When I was a little girl I used to scrunch up a piece of paper that I’d been writing on if what I was doing wasn’t perfect. I also used to pull my hair out of a ponytail if it wasn’t tied up perfectly and start again. There had to be no bumps in my hair! I remember taking so long before school every day to get my hair just right.

You’re probably wondering what this has to do with business. A lot actually!

So many people want everything to be perfect in business before they start. They have to have the logo, business cards, website. Their program has to be set up and ready to go. Everything has to be just right.

But you know what? There’s always going to be something else to do. There is no such thing as perfect. You could spend your time being busy – doing all the admin, graphics and spending time procrastinating on facebook. Or you could spend your time being productive, doing strategic marketing and actually getting on the phone and making sales.

Focus on the things that are going to get your ideal clients in front of you and make you more money. That’s why you’re in business right? Because if you want an admin job I’m sure there’s plenty around.

I ran my new businesses for a year before setting up a website or getting a logo. I still don’t have business cards or flyers (don’t need them) and I only create layouts for my programs first not the whole program. It’s more important to market and sell the program than having it 100% complete or perfect. All you need to get started is the first couple of weeks and you can do the rest as you go along.

There’s no such thing as perfect anyway.

I’ve found that people use the terms – I’m a perfectionist or I’m a procrastinator to give themselves an excuse for not doing the work. When really it’s not about wanting everything to be perfect or putting things off at all.

There’s always something deeper going on. That’s just the story you’re telling yourself to get out of doing the work.

With perfectionism it’s usually because you are scared of judgment. You’re worried that putting yourself out there will cause others to put you down or think badly of you.

And you know what? Some people may think that. But they are not worth your time anyway! You want to help the people who really need your help. Who get motivated by what you put out there. The people who want to change their lives. Not the people who want to put someone down on social media.

And the people who do that are just scared that they can’t put themselves out there. That you are taking action on your goals and they are too shit scared to do the same. It’s all a reflection baby! So then you realise, it was never about you anyway……

So time to tell yourself something different.
Time to take action.

Prioritise the most important things first. Usually, the ones that scare you or you’ve been putting off are the most important. I used to put off doing tech stuff, because it all seemed too hard. I told myself I didn’t know how to do it. But then I realised I’m going to have to do it eventually anyway. So instead of saying I couldn’t do it, I figured out how I could do it. After I watched tutorials I created 2 websites, a membership site and multiple landing pages and sales pages in just one month.  I was terrible at tech. I still don’t like it and pay someone to do it most of the time. But at least I now know how.
Sometimes I get out of the habit of making regular sales calls. I know I love making sales calls and I’ve done it for a long time. But even I sometimes have crappy days where I don’t want to pick up the phone. Then I get over myself and just do it. And feel so much better afterwards. It’s not about you. It’s about them. By picking up the phone you are reaching out your hand to help someone. Finding out all about them, their goals, what they are struggling with and how you can help them. I get energy and inspiration from talking to people and I feel good afterwards because I have helped someone. Even if they don’t sign up to my stuff I have still helped them by reaching out my hand.

So I want you to think about where you’re currently doing this in your business. What are you putting off and why? And what action can you take to move forwards?

Take action on this today. No more putting it off!

Take Time Out To Earn More

Taking time away from your business is just as important as the work that you do in your business.

I have been guilty in the past of having an all or nothing mentality. It’s something I’ve worked on a lot. But at times I still struggle with being switched on and go, go, go all the time. My mentor tells me that he’ll know we’ve had the biggest success when I’m actually doing less.

When you are all or nothing you go from one extreme to the other. On a big high, to big lows. You end up getting overwhelmed and burnt out.

Which usually results in getting sick, injured or feeling like you have bi-polar (entrepreneurial bi-polar?). Taking time out regularly allows you to unwind, re-charge, have clarity and feel connected to what you want in life.
Today I want you to think about how can you do this in your life?
Whether it’s holidays through the year, or having a tech free day once a week, meditating daily, going for a walk each morning, trying something new………
What can you do that helps you to unwind and take time out from always being ON?

There’s a lot of coaches out there that promote one extreme or the other.


4 AM crew


Staying up late drinking wine and eating chocolate and getting minimal sleep.

None of these things are healthy in the long run. Yes you’ve got to put the hours in, especially when you’re starting out. But you should also start with the end in mind.

If you start your business working crazy hours, letting your clients dictate when you work and what work you do, doing things you aren’t passionate about……… It will be hard to stop or change the way you are running your business. And where does this all end? When you’re burnt out, having to go back to a day job because you’ve lost the passion?

Stuff that!

Business is your life and your life is your business. YOU are your business. But that doesn’t mean it has to consume you. Create your life around your business and your business around your life. There is time for everything in life that’s important to you. Cut out the stuff that doesn’t matter and just keep the good stuff.

Instead of jamming your week full of busy-ness, just put in the things that are important to you. This doesn’t just include getting work done but also time out for you, time with your friends or family and time to just chill out.

Quiet the mind and clarity and energy will come.

Why Most PT’s Fail (and how you can be different)

If you are in business you need to be good at sales and marketing and if you’re not, then you better learn!

A lot of trainers and coaches get in to business because they love training or coaching people. They fill up their days with as many sessions as they can. They get busy. Then everyone (including themselves) thinks they are successful but success doesn’t work like that.

It may look like you’re successful on the outside but filling your days with back to back sessions only burns you out. You start to deliver worse sessions.  You begrudgingly talk to clients all day. You feel exhausted and like you’re just going through the motions each day. You wish you could just take a break. You get to a point where you can’t fit any more sessions in but you want to make more money and help more people. You’ve reached your limit and you don’t know what else you can do.

There are a number of different things you can do to leverage your time. The main ones being: Building your online sales, working with groups rather than 1:1 and products.

I’m going to talk about the first two because that’s what I’ve done for myself and help my clients with.

Building your online business

In my first business I hardly did any 1:1 PT (I still hardly do any PT!). I built that business off running bootcamps. Yes this helped leverage my time. But I had multiple locations and 10 people working for me.

Having this structure meant that I was running all over the place getting to different sessions. And I also had to earn around $1000 a week just to pay wages. That was before anything else was even accounted for!

The way I have my business structured now is mainly focusing on online and phone coaching. Which means I can work from anywhere in the world I want to and still make money and help my clients. I’ve just gotten back from 5 weeks in the US where I only worked 5-10 hours a week and added an extra $4K in recurring monthly income into my business.

This structure also means I have a lot of flexibility around the hours I work and can plan my week how I want to. Which means I get to spend plenty of time with my kids – getting them ready in the mornings, doing homework in the afternoon, playing and having family dinners. Where most PT’s are typically running sessions at these times.

From a business perspective the biggest benefit from working this way is I have plenty of time each week to focus on growing my businesses not just working in them. I only take on a certain number of 1:1 clients so that I can spend time on content creation, marketing and sales.

Because that’s how you grow a business right?!

If you want to fill your days with sessions and not do any of the business side of things then you should just go and work for someone else. Do what you are good at and get rid of the stress of running a business. The thing is business is hard work. It takes a lot of your time. And if you’re not passionate about it it will eat you alive. When you find your passion and are doing something you love it will flow so much easier.

So either learn how to market and sell and run a business or just go work for someone else.

Working with groups

Working with groups is a great way to leverage your time. You get to help more people in the same amount of time that you could help one person and you can make more money in this time. You only have so many hours in the day, use them wisely.

If you fill up your week with 1:1 sessions there’s only so many sessions you can do. However, if you set a certain amount of hours you want to work face to face and fill those hours up with multiple people per hour you will leverage your time more.


Option 1: 1:1 PT session charging $80 an hour (some charge less, some charge more, I’m using $80 as an average). Total income $80.

Option 2: Bootcamp session charging $20 per person with 15 people in the session. Total income $300.

I know which one I would choose to not only leverage my time so I could spend more time with my family, for my own training and chill out time and to spend more time on my business and of course make more money and help more people!

If you’re currently working too many face to face hours and don’t have enough time to work on your business something has to change. Otherwise all you’ve created for yourself is another job not an actual business.

Having a business means you have time to work on and grow the business. It means you can actually take time off to travel, chill out or if you’re sick or injured. It means the business can run without you – not that the business is you.

How To Create A Killer Opt-in

What is an opt-in?

An opt-in is something that you use to generate leads to build your database. You give something to your target market that will help make their life easier or solve a problem they are having.

How do you do this?

Think about what your niche’s biggest problem is right now. Start solving that problem by giving great content and value. As I mentioned above you do this by giving them something for free in exchange for their details.

Remember to just give a bit of info, not everything, so that they will want to find out more. They will still get massive value from what you give them. But most people don’t just need education. They need accountability, support, motivation and a clear plan to reach their goals. So don’t worry about giving too much, because there is always more they will need or questions they will have.

Have a call to action at the end. Eg. If you want to find out more do ______ (give phone number for health assessment etc).

Remember to be different. Look at what everyone else does and do the opposite. Be interesting and fun. Everyone does meal plans, free week or first session or ebooks. That’s boring! Think of something different. Try an email or video series – where they get 1 email or video a week for a certain number of weeks. Or even challenges they have to complete each week.

Things that I have used:

  • How to make healthy lunches in under 10 minutes (1 cooking video for 5 weeks).

Take action: 

Think about who your niche are, what they need right now that will help them with a problem, be fun and interesting and get it out there.
